DIY Shower Melts Recipe

Ingredients:

1 cup baking soda

1/2 cup citric acid

1/2 cup corn starch

A few drops of soap dye (optional)

1 1/2 tsp essential oil (choose your favorite; popular options are eucalyptus, lavender, or lemon)

Spray bottle with Witch hazel or water

Silicone molds

Non-metallic mixing bowl

Gloves

Airtight storage container

Instructions:

1. Mix Dry Ingredients:

In a large bowl, combine the baking soda, citric acid, and corn starch. Mix well to avoid any clumps.

2. Add Essential Oils and optional colorant:

Gradually add your chosen essential oil and colorant to the dry mixture. This recipe uses 1 1/2 tsp of essential oils but you can adjust based on your scent preference. For the colorant, you can add it directly to the mixture and mix with your gloved hands, or, you can add it to your spray bottle of witch hazel. (I wash the bottle and spray attachment immediately after use so it doesn’t stain.)

3. Add Witch Hazel Sparingly:

Spray the mixture with your spray bottle but do so sparingly. You can wear gloves and do this by hand. The mixture should hold together when squeezed but not be too wet. Be careful not to add too much liquid, as it will cause the mixture to fizz prematurely.

4. Mold the Mixture:

I like to place my silicone mold on a baking sheet so that moving them later is much easier. (I used heart-shaped molds for this recipe, but you can use whatever mold you’d like - be creative for different seasons!) Pack the mixture tightly into your silicone molds or ice cube trays. Press down firmly to ensure they hold their shape. If you think they are drying out too quickly, spray them with a little of the witch hazel.

5. Dry the Melts:

Allow the melts to dry for at least 12 - 24 hours. If they feel too crumbly, let them sit longer until they harden completely.

6. Unmold and Store:

Once dried, gently remove the melts from the molds. Store them in an airtight container until you’re ready to use them.

How to Use:

Place a shower melt on the floor or shelf in your shower away from the direct water stream. As the water hits it, it will dissolve, releasing aromatic steam. If stored in an airtight container, these should last 3-4 months.

Feel free to customize the recipe with different essential oils or add dried herbs for extra scent and aesthetics. Enjoy your spa-like shower experience!
