In 2020, I decided to attempt to learn more about the craft of resin - I’d watched videos and tutorials and was completely mesmerized by the fluid medium and even more impressed by the ending results - especially those pieces that resembled the ocean.  I had no idea what this journey would entail, but after purchasing my first round of supplies, I started mixing resin, trying colored pigments…and using different bases on which to pour this beautiful medium.  Very quickly, I learned that resin most definitely has a mind of it’s own - and I became even more aware that there was going to be quite the learning curve to achieve certain results. (And, this learning curve was going to require more patience that I understood, or possessed at the time!)   There is limited amount of time to work with resin since it’s starts to cure soon after you. mix it, and this added to my anxiety during each project.

My ideas were a bit advanced for my skill set at the time and I found myself really doubting my future as a resin artist.  The year became so much for us, and I know it did for most of you, too.  We had moved my mother in with us as her dementia had progressed to the point where she could no longer live on her own, my work space was limited, and my mood was matching pretty much the rest of the world’s mood (I.e. rotten) - so I packed everything up, shoved all of the pieces I’d started working on into the dog-hair filled corner of my work space, and just went on muddling through life.  

Fast forward to fall of 2021, I am seeing more and more resin artists popping up in my social media feeds and realizing how much I’d like to try it again - and out of the blue, a friend contacted me and asked if I could make her an ocean resin board for a Christmas gift.  I decided to use this as a chance to really devote some time to push myself to learn the techniques that I could not seem to master previously.  I bought all new supplies, new brands of resin and pigments - I read articles, watched tutorials and just practiced and practiced!  I’d say it was about 3 weeks of time that I worked on it every single day.  I wasted a lot of resin…to be completely honest, but I found that I was finally starting to understand a lot of the ins and outs of how to achieve certain effects. Lacing, or creating cells, is one example of a technique that I just could not seem to emulate until now.  

Moving forward, I am excited to offer resin art, both pre-made and custom/commissioned, services in my business. Design and DIY will still be my primary focus, but resin has become a medium that I enjoy so much and I want to be able to continue to create and explore the massive possibilities I see.
