Handmade Recipe Card Box

I’d had so many ideas for DIY classes this Mother’s Day “season”…but sadly, the quarantine we’re all experiencing has changed a lot of my in-person plans this year. Luckily, we have online spaces to still connect and DIY together!

As many of you know, I am someone who very much loves to keep the “art of handwritten” alive. Recipes, letters, even envelopes with addresses from long ago - all are such special treasures to me.

Last Christmas, I took my mom’s recipe box and replicated many of the hand written recipes onto cutting boards and signs. I also took old letters and envelopes and was able to engrave them into such special gifts for family members!

This spring, I had planned to have DIY classes for everyone to come together around this same topic - the art of handwritten. Grandmothers, Aunts, Moms, Daughters and Sisters were all invited to come together to create and PRESERVE special pieces.

I made this recipe card box by using my mom’s old 5” x 3” standard as inspiration.

The new design has a tongue and groove pattern for easy assembly and hinges in the back - it does take a bit of patience when assembling, but I do love how it turned out! I ended up making a total of 3 boxes to house recipes from my mother, step-mother and mother-in-law. They will be proudly displayed on some new shelving in our kitchen.

The divider cards were also cut in my Glowforge by using my trusty “print and place” method. So fast and easy! I have options for both card stock and wooden dividers and while the wooden are beautiful, there is just something special about the paper card stock that I prefer.

I also made a small easel for the recipe cards to sit on when in use.

To go with the new accent colors in my kitchen, I used a vintage aqua stain to color it.

While I have been fulfilling orders of these for friends and family, I decided to also create a DIY kit for those who would like to make their own recipe boxes. The DIY Kit comes with:

  • All box pieces

  • Your custom engraving on the front of the box, “Grandma’s Recipes”

  • A wooden easel to display a recipe card

  • Hinges and screws for assembly

  • Card stock dividers (blank)

  • 2 card stock pages of Mother’s Day labels

If you are a Glowforge owner and want to make your own recipe card box, I have made the files available in my shop here, or in my Etsy Shop.

If you’re thinking about purchasing a Glowforge Laser Printer, I would love to help you learn!

You can use my referral link to receive the following discounts:

  • $500 off a Pro model

  • $250 off a Plus model

  • $100 off a Basic model

As always, I am really excited to see what everyone’s boxes look like! I truly hope that these inspire you all to hold on to those handwritten pieces and make something special with them.
